The Future

Carbon Dioxide emissions continue to increase in the U.S. while methane and nitrous oxide emissions are decreasing. The declines in methane emissions are due to a variety of technological, policy, and agricultural changes, such as increased capture of methane from landfills for energy, reduced emissions from natural gas systems, and declining cattle populations. (EPA)

Computer climate models show that greenhouse gas emissions, specifically those from Carbon Dioxide, will continue to increase. The models are all different based on different data and opinions, but they all agree that without extreme changes made, global warming will worsen. (EIA, UMICH) Even if humans stopped burning fossil fuels, it would take years for global warming to slow down based on atmospheric inertia.

As an update, I found that if we all breathed half as much as we do, we could reduce CO2 emissions by 4%! How to do this: hold your breath, exercise less, sleep more, and meditate!

Do you know approximately how long it will take for global warming to stop, taking into account of all countries follow through with their plans of lowering greenhouse gas emissions etc...?

Nice way to wrap things up. It's interesting that capturing methane gas from landfills gives us double benefits--a new source of energy and reduced greenhouse gas emission.

I second Ariane's question. I learned a lot from your blog and I think you layed out the information very neatly. It was very easy to read and understand. If we do nothing about global warming, how long will it take before more serious events to take place?

Why is it that it takes so long for global warming to slow down, even if emissions have completely ended? Did you find this anywhere in your research?

Due to atmospheric inertia, are greenhouse gas emissions increasing steadily over the years or is it more of an expotential growth?

Why do you tink it is that the less harmful or known greenhouse gases are decreasing in emissions while the biggest culprit, carbon is still increasing?
